SideTrip: Bedrock Wine Co.

~ Morgan Twain-Peterson ,  Owner & Winemaker Bedrock Wine Company ~

Five.  That's a big age for children.   You start kindergarten.  You learn that actions have consequences.  You start to develop and understand your language skills. You begin to wonder why.  And you began to ask questions of parents; such as:  Is it ok if I have a snack?

Not Morgan Twain-Peterson.   He was asking things like - is it ok if I blend Malbec with Zinfandel?  Is it ok if I have another taste of that Merlot?   Indeed, at age five  Morgan was not only tasting wine, he was making it.  He claims that by five he could tell the difference between Merlot and Zinfandel and after a gift from the Sangiacomo family,  made wine before his 6th birthday.

It's clearly a gift and one that we as wine lovers are now reaping rewards from.  Today,  we focus on Morgan's Bedrock Wine Company and his humble Old Vine Zinfandel.   Bedrock sources grapes from throughout California and as such,  this wine bears no appellation on the label.  Yet the process is artisan and the results, impressive.  Just one of many wines in his stable, which includes mostly Zinfandel and Syrah,  his Old Vine Zinfandel is his entry level red.

The 2013 Bedrock Wine Company Old Vine Zinfandel is deep violet in color  with a slightly lighter violet ring at the rim.  At once you are greeted by that unique "Zinberry" aroma that only this grape possesses.  Added to that are briary notes with a touch of pepper and menthol.  On the palate, the wine is ripe, delicious and well balanced.  It's core of lively wild berry fruit is punctuated by eucalyptus, powdery minerals, and spicy pepper.  The acids keep this fresh.  It's 15% and ripe for sure, but not overdone and not cloying. Very tasty on it's own and with crusty brick oven pizza.

Many of the Bedrock wines are available locally and I've already bought more of this.  I may have to explore some of Morgan's other labels.  91 points,  about $28.

~ Great character in this wine - from vines 50-100 years old ~

Cheers!
