The Patriarch.
While Luciano Sandrone's winemaking style may be the subject of some debate among lovers of "Old Guard" Piedmontese wines, the quality in the bottle simply cannot be denied. Over the years, I've enjoyed hundreds of Sandrone's wines and I don't ever recall being disappointed.
Founded in 1978, the Sandrone winery is run by Luciano and his younger, winemaking brother Luca. The family farms
approximately 27 hectares of vineyards, about 75% of which they own directly.

Today's review is on the newly released 2012 Dolcetto d'Alba. The first time I had Dolcetto I was instantly captured by its charm. Wonderfully aromatic and easily accessible, it's easy to see why it's an everyday wine among the Piedmontese. The instant case is no exception.
The 2012 Sandrone is a deep purple in the glass with violet reflections. There's no need to decant here. The aromas leap from the glass. Flowers, slight smoke, fennel and a bright pure black grape essence are easily notable. Flavors largely mirror the nose and the balanced acids allow for structure and freshness. Dolcetto in general are never too tannic and while this is delicious now, it can last in your cellar for 2-4 years with no worries. Really nice effort. 90 points and a great value at around $20.

~ Look at that color! Dolcetto is very versatile. We paired this with roasted chicken breast in a sauce of red wine, tomato, and onions. ~ |
