Another Tuscan Value

Fattoria Le Pupille is among the best producers in the Maremma.  Period.  I don't think that can be understated and it should be distinctly understood.

Their "Poggio Valente" Morellino di Scansano can stand with the best Sangiovese in Italy.  Their Super Tuscan, Saffredi, is among my favorite wines, for it's unique blend that makes it original.

Over the weekend, we tried a new release from Le Pupille,  the 2010 Morellino di Scansano.

The wine is a deep garnet red with pretty violet overtones.  Straightforward aromas of flowers, herbs and cherries dominate.  The complexity, while slight, is enough to keep the wine interesting.  This is not a meditative wine - but the perfect foil for food - and that's where it belongs.  On the palate, the core of cherry-berry fruit is juicy and balanced by a trace of vanilla and soft tannins.  The quality of the vintage is evident in this wine and comes fore in it's juicy, ripe core of fruit.  Paired very nicely with fava risotto with shaved prosciutto and parmigiano.  Could easily be a case purchase and "house red".   89 points, about $15.

  1. John, sounds like a solid wine, and at that price a definite buy!
