Castelli del GrevePesa is a tightly knit coop of wine growers in northern Chianti Classico who came together with the aim of preserving the classic sense of the traditional Tuscan viticulture.
Founded in 1965, the estate lies just north west of Greve in Chianti Classico and today creates its wines from some of the finest vineyards in the zone sourced from Panzano, Greve, and Lamole.
Today we're focusing on the estates Gran Selezione produced from the Lamole area. The vines owned in this corner of Chianti Classico are approaching 60 years of age, are west-southwest facing situated at some 550 meters above sea level and cover almost 10 hectares. Harvest is accomplished by hand and about 600 cases are produced.
The 2010 Castelli del GrevePesa Gran Selezione is 100% Sangiovese that was aged for 18 months in large cask and, according to the new guidelines for Gran Selezione, 30 months in total.
The wine is a deep ruby in the glass with brilliant violet highlights. This is classic in every sensory aspect. On the nose, the bright Sangiovese fruit is accented by the scent of flowers, leather, and spices. In the mouth the wine provides a seamless array of crushed berry, tobacco, earth, and mushroom flavors that are harmonic yet well delineated. This is site specific and very well done. Approachable now, it has the stuffing to last 5-7 years in your cellar. Price can vary here, so shop carefully. 94 points, about $20-$40 and a great value at the lower end.
