Breaking News from Montalcino Today: Biondi Santi has announced that due to the adverse weather conditions that permeated the 2014 harvest, there will be no Biondi Santi Brunello 2014 bottled. The estate is planning to declassify all of its Brunello and use it to fortify their Rosso di Montalcino.

Proprietor Jacopo Biondi Santi believes this to be a difficult but courageous decision, one that maintains the reputation of Tenuta Il Greppo and the prestige of the Brunello name.

It will be interesting to see if other wineries in Montalcino now consider following suit. Giacomo Bartolommei, winemaker and proprietor at Caprili, has already confirmed to me that only a small portion of 2014 Brunello will be made. Il Palazzone is likely to follow suit. As it stands, they plan on bottling a small amount of 2014, but as the aging process progresses, they may be forced to change their thinking.

ReplyDeleteBiondi Santi always has been Dennis - I've not always liked their style, but I did buy some of the 2006. It's a shame as I was in Montalcino in 2014. I have to update this article as a few other producers have also told me they won't be producing.
