Campaccio Riserva

~ Vines in Chianti Classico at Terrabianca, Radda in Chianti ~

On my visit to Radda this year one of the stops I made was at the Terrabianca winery whose broad array of wines I've always enjoyed.  I brought home several bottles that day; among them, the winery's flagship Campaccio Riserva.

The Campaccio Riserva is 50% Cabernet grown in Maremma and 50% Sangiovese grown in Radda.  The wine is crafted by renowned perfectionist Vittorio Fiore and is vinified in stainless steel tanks.  Aging takes place for two full years in French barrique and an additional year in bottle prior to release.  It's always an excellent bottle of red and fly substantially under the radar.  Ergo, comparitively it's quite the value.

The 2008 Campaccio Riserva  like many other 2008's is fragrant and delicious and very accessible.  It's a dark ruby in the glass with some violet highlights.  Aromas are so pretty.  Freshly cut flowers, sweet tobacco, red fruits and fresh herbs are notable.  On the palate, the wine is fresh and vibrant with juicy acidity and mellow tannins.  It drinks very well now.  The core flavors of cherry are accented by soft wood notes, vanilla, and dried herbs.  Delicious on it's own and with the stew.  Once the 2010 vintage of this wine is released, it will be something to stock up on.  93 points, about 30 Euro.  Price varies widely in the US but averages around $55.  It's worth it.
