After tasting the subject of today's article at Gambero Rosso, I knew it would be something I would seek out when it was released. Last week, I ran across it and grabbed a few bottles.
The 2009 Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is certainly a noble wine. Comprised of 80% Sangiovese (Clone, Prugnolo Gentile) with the balance to unspecified varietals, this is a dark purple-violet color and gorgeous to look at.
In the glass the aromas are generous, with spicy dark plum and berry fruit framed by lavendar and wonderful sage and floral aromas. Just like at Gambero Rosso, I got lost in smelling this wine. My tasting partner remarked: "this is fiercely aromatic". I'd agree, and can only say, don't risk missing this phase of the wine. If you've got a few, open one now and enjoy it.
On the palate, the wine is elegant and classy. Deep red fruit flavors are accented by fresh pipe tobacco, dried herbs, and new leather. Slight coffee on the finish. There is such a wonderful pure freshness to the fruit; and the acids and tannins are in perfect harmony. Really wonderful wine and at the price, you can afford to put a few away.
