Mastrojanni Rosso di Montalcino

I've been fortunate enough to try the 2009 version of this wine on a few occasions now, so when the 2010 turned up, I was eager to taste it.

The 2010 Mastrojannni Rosso di Montalcino is fresh and vibrant.  In the glass, the color is a medium violet, with pretty reflections.  The aroma features a bit of game to accentuate the red cherry, spice and floral components.  On the palate, the wine is medium bodied, with a firm core of juicy berry fruit, slight vanilla, and a mild meat character.  Overall, an interesting and tasty wine, but not quite up to the level of the excellent 2009.   The flavors were not as persistent or as intense, despite the wine exhibiting good complexity. Knowing the quality of this estate, I'm comfortable assuming this is due more to the vintage variation.   89 points, about $22.  Disclosure:  This was a distributor provided sample.
