I've had this wine resting in the cellar for a month or so now and have been excited to try it. We opened it last night with the recently written up Tuscan White Beans with Shrimp appetizer. Additionally, there was some Camembert, Grana, and some olives to pass around.
The 2008 Tabarrini Montefalco Rosso, a blend of Sangiovese and Sagrantino is unlike it's heavier Sagrantino siblings. In the glass, the wine is a pure, pretty violet with bright ruby reflections. The aromas are persistent; perfumed with crushed cherry, slight leather, and a bit of smokey ash. On the palate, the wine is juicy and generous with a bright core of crushed wild berry fruit, a touch of spice, a hint of smoke and a lovely fresh herb component that reminded slightly of a primitivo or zinfandel. It's balanced with moderate tannins and acidity and is clearly meant to consume while Sagrantino and other cellar worthy wines mature.
The 2008 is off the market now, but the 2009 will be something to seek out when it is released. This is delicious wine and a great value. 91 Points, about $14. Disclosure: This bottle was a producer provided sample.
