Castello di Bossi Chianti Classico

Now that we're in the midst of the holiday period, let me wish all my readers a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!

This is the first in a series of reviews and recipes that will be forthcoming throughout the holidays.  I hope you enjoy.

Castello di Bossi may not be the first name that comes to mind when thinking of Chianti Classico, but I am at a loss to understand why.  They have a great team in place, they have great terroir and are located in Berardenga - perhaps the best location within the zone.  All of this shows in their wines which have been outstanding since I began following them sometime around the 2005 vintage release.

The 2009 Castello di Bossi Chianti Classico is no exception.  I opened this Christmas afternoon with assorted antipasto:  shrimp with white beans, cheeses, salumi and antipasto salad. It paired well with all the dishes and is a significant step up over the 2008.  It reminded me of their 2007.

In the glass, it's a pretty bright violet color and aromas are easily enticed.  It's a very floral Sangiovese and I love that - bright violets, lavendar, sage, red berries and tobacco are all present. Flavors follow the aromas of the nose and the structure of the wine is balanced with ripe, dusty tannins and crisp acidity.  I love this wine, and will buy more.   It drinks well now, and will age 3-5 years with no issue.  Further, it's very affordable.  91 points, about $15.
