Ambra, my Ambra

~ Vineyards on the Fattoria Ambra Estate in Carmignano ~

It was only a few months that I initially reviewed the subject of today's article, the 2009 Fattoria Ambra Carmignano.  I wasn't particularly enamored by it then, but after finding some additional bottles, I decided to give it another try.

I had forgotten the details of my previous review and I'm glad I didn't refer to it prior to tasting this bottle.  It may have tainted my perceptions and that would have been a shame. This bottle was quite a few steps up in terms of expressiveness and was much more interesting to drink.  I'm not sure whether this is simply do to bottle variability or if the first bottle (from a different retailer) may have been slightly flawed.

The 2009 Ambra Carmignano is a deep violet red with a pretty purple to violet color at the rim.  The nose is expressive with flowers, fresh tobacco, red fruits and lavendar.  It's very pretty.  On the palate, the fruit is ripe and vibrant.  It's notably richer than the bottle in the review linked above and it's what I expect given the vintage and the producer's reputation.  The core of fruit is accented nicely by fresh leather, fresh clay and a nice streak of mouth watering acidity. Balanced very well overall and a nice accompaniment to simple grilled chicken.  This bottle seems very exuberant. It isn't that the first bottle seemed "flat" but this seems noticeably fresher and is very vibrant.  I'll leave it for the reader to decide, but at this price, I definitely recommend seeking this out.  91 points, about $15.
