CellarNote: 1997 Argiano Brunello

Without question, one of the joys of being a wine lover is reaching into the cellar and grabbing a wine you've carefully stored for years in the hopes that it presents itself in a stately way; not possible in the wine's youth.  I did just that last night. 

 

Argiano has been a stalwart producer of Brunello for ages.  In the past, I've not always counted their Brunello among my favorites, but mostly that was based on youthful examples of the type.  This mature Brunello met the highest expectations.

1997 was a great growing year in Tuscany.  While not considered a "classic" vintage due to increased ripeness levels in some of the grapes, many estates made excellent wines.  This 16 year old Brunello is a case in point.  Poured directly from the bottle, this medium ruby wine displays the classic color of Sangiovese, with a slight orange/copper color at the rim of the bowl. 

 

Exotic spices, reduced leaves, crushed berries and flowers are evident on the nose and palate.  The wine is stately, harmonius, with nary a trace of any oak infused aromas or flavors. The tannins have resolved nicely, and are present in perfect proportion to the sweet, perfumed fruit.  The acids are balanced and refreshing.  This is delicious wine, and for me, at it's peak. I don't see it improving further so if you have some, time to open.  93 points.  About $40 upon release.
