Something drew me to this wine.....
It was there, on the list, staring at me. Not because it represented good value, because it did. It was way less than I assumed I'd have to spend on wine. But the vintage, oh that 2009 vintage, to borrow a phrase from the great General Patton: "God help me, I love it so!"
2009 is a great vintage. It's no coincidence that three of the best Rosso di Montalcino's I've ever tasted in my life come from this vintage. With a decadent, delicious orrechiette pasta with a short rib ragu, I ordered the Il Poggione 2009 Rosso di Montalcino.
In the glass, the wine is a beautiful vibrant, ruby with bright violet reflections. The nose is captivating, with bright crushed berry fruit, rose petals, wild flowers, sage, coffee, and cedar. Amazing! In the mouth, the wine produces a round, juicy harmony of red fruits, with new leather, coffee, and fennel all in perfect balance with acids and tannins. This is simply the best Rosso di Montalcino I've had in years, maybe ever. It's that good. Worth a purchase. Worth a case purchase. 93 points. $42 on the list. I'm guessing maybe about $20 retail.
